Buying and Selling online at Ebay and other sites

SELLING ON EBAY AND OTHER SITES

What is selling? What do people want?

Look at the Ebay Completed Listings under "Advanced". Put in what you want to sell or your selling ideas. Do these things sell? Also, you can go and look at other people’s stores selling what you want to sell. Check their completed listings. You can see what they have sold and what they have not been able to sell. Finding your niche can take awhile - but you can find out what things others are selling or not selling by this method.

Message boards and help with auctions — check out what other people are writing about the things you want to sell. You can get some good hints there. Your expertise? Sell what you know. If you don’t know about what you want to sell, ask somebody who does, or do research online or in the library to find out more. Condition, condition, condition. Find out the condition markers for your item. Books — collectible vs. used, New, Very Good, Good, Acceptable are all different conditions. Ebay often has condition sheets for many different items that you can download. Other sites do, too. Keep strictly to the condition list you find, and even list as a lesser grade or condition than you think your item really is, and you will be safe. The better condition your item is in (especially if it is collectible or antique) the better price it will command.

Screen out unwanted bidders

Click the bottom section on the Ebay listing form to help you screen out unwanted bidders. This is prefilled out on the Ebay listing page. It will automatically be filled out for you after the first few auctions.

Become a trusted seller.

Build trust with good About Me Pages and a website or blog. You can also blog on Ebay, and do a My World page. Share about yourself. Are you an expert? Show this on your page or website. This can really help people trust you and trust your products, too.

Do your homework.

Always do your research before you sell. Sometimes a thing is worth a lot to YOU, but on auction not so much. You can learn by experience (and you probably will), but you can also learn by other people’s experience.

Don’t spam...

Keyword spamming is not allowed. This is what you have probably seen on web pages, emails, and some auctions before. An example of keyword spamming is: Dolls, paper dolls, best ebay auction, jet airplanes, recipes, cars, racing form, low price, best auction, pencils, pens, office items, rain, jewelry, looking for books, looking, pets... Notice anything unusual about the words on this list? Most don’t really go together. Using a lot of words that don’t even describe the auction, getting people to see auctions when they didn’t even want to, these are all "keyword spamming," meant to get traffic to an auction illegally. Of course, you won’t want to do this.

Auctiva

List with Auctiva — this makes it easier. Put your photos on in a Monthly folder, and then do your listing, using your templates. Make templates first. Save your listing, check it first, then send to Ebay.

Paypal

Paypal — fee to sellers. They do collect a fee, as does Ebay. But Ebay likes Paypal because they own it, and give preference to your listings because of that. Plus, it’s fast, and easy for your customers. They give you added security on your listings. You will find out more about this from the other presenter today.

NEWSFLASHES

This week Ebay said they will soon also give protection to UNCONFIRMED addresses (people who don’t want to put their credit card online). More news — ebooks have to be on classified ads format on Ebay as of March 31.

Also: Sellers may not leave negative feedback on Ebay as of March 31. There are a couple of workarounds to this. #1: don’t leave ANY feedback if you are not satisfied. #2: block buyers you don’t like, #3 go to the Blacklist website and block people you think you don’t want to bid, and, #4, use the built-in Ebay list of no-bid bidders on the list form.

I found this out in June while reading a message on Ebay: You may NOT use honest words on the positive feedback. Example: POSITIVE: shipping was slow, and customer was rude, because Ebay management has decided that this is not allowed. If you do this (use negative wording on a positive feedback) it will be taken off, and you will get in trouble.

What happened with ebooks lately at Ebay?

They are making ebook dealers advertise with classified ads instead of offering downloads now. The reason that Ebay gives is that this will cut down on unfair feedback manipulation. This new policy is making many ebook dealers move, and some are thinking of offering pamphlets or CD’s now. Other sites still allow ebooks though, so if you like ebooks, you can still find many for free or cheap at other sites for instant download. I personally don’t agree with this new Ebay rules change, but Ebay has been ramping up many kinds of changes lately for many reasons. I haven’t really figured this one out yet. The wise people at Ebay suggest figuring "workarounds" for each change, because Ebay is still the auction site with by far the most traffic (actual hits, or people coming to look at items) today even counting all the others.

What is "Best Match"? This is a combination of factors, such as almost completed listing, seller gives a good shipping price, and seller has good feedback. These people get much better positioning in listings. In other words, these you will see first.
